The name Monaco is derived from the legendary Monaco Grand Prix – a Formula One motor race that is held each year on the Circuit de Monaco. Jack Heuer, who was a big fan of motorsports, set out to create a watch that would appeal to race drivers as well as watch aficionados. He mastered his challenging goal with flying colours as the Hollywood star Steve McQueen wore the Monaco in the famous motorsports film “LeMans”.

Equipped with the innovative Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement, the Monaco easily demonstrates the technical expertise of TAG Heuer. Presented at the top of the dial is the “Chronomatic” lettering, which is a combination of the movement’s name: Chronograph and Automatic. At the bottom of the dial, wearers can find “Monaco” lettering inscribed. The shape of the watch stands out with an uncommon square case along with two pushers placed at the 2 and 4 o’clock markers. Furthermore, a handy date display can be found at the 6 o’clock marker.

The Monaco is renowned for its boldness and precision, which are two crucial characteristics in any motorsports race. TAG Heuer – the company name since 1985 – continues to set new standards in the industry. Recently, the Monaco V4 was introduced and is the world’s first timepiece with a belt-driven transmission. Evidently, TAG Heuer stands for sporty elegance and timeless aesthetics – a philosophy that is finely expressed in the Monaco series.

Steve McQueen in “Le Mans”

The TAG Heuer Monaco on the big screen

With the presentation of the Monaco on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the famous motorsports movie “LeMans”, the timepiece gained incredible celebrity status. The legend behind the successful arrangement states that Heuer watches were shown to the film’s directors and stars. The star of the Lemans film, McQueen himself, decided to sport the brand new Monaco chronograph around his wrist. The timepiece is clearly visible with a perforated leather strap in some scenes of the movie as well as on promotional billboards.

In addition, McQueen also chose a Monaco model with a unique steel bracelet, which was just a prototype at the time. The watch with the steel bracelet can be spotted in many photos and quickly gained prominence as a result. For a period of time, TAG Heuer ceased the production of these models. Luckily, the manufacturer has now reissued the classic Monaco design and now offers a wide range of versions – including the Monaco with a steel strap.

The Monaco LS Chronograph

The reinterpretation of a classic

In the summer of 2009, TAG Heuer launched a new version of the Monaco – the Monaco Calibre 12 LS Automatic Chronograph. The reinterpretation of the classic holds the powerful Swiss made movement Calibre 12, which is enclosed in a typical Monaco square case. Simple and accurate reading of the time is made easy with the linear scale and a red rhodium seconds hand. Hence the name of the chronograph – LS stands for linear second.

The polished steel case, luminescent raised indices, chronograph counters, and the overall square form of the watch coincide with harmonious elegance. The case of the watch measures 40.5-millimeters and the timepiece is equipped with water resistance up to 100 metres. TAG Heuer clients can opt for a watchstrap comprised of alligator leather or stainless steel. Both versions are elegantly fastened with a secure clasp.

Bill Paxton, Al Pacino & Co.

For decades, the Monaco has been the timepiece of choice for influential individuals. Veteran Bill Paxon for example, wears the famous TAG Heuer Monaco in the 2004 film, “Thunderbirds”. Furthermore, Al Pacino sported the chronograph from the Monaco series in the mystery thriller “88 Minutes”. The Monaco can also be spotted on the wrists of actors such as Will Smith, Brad Pitt, or Matthew McConaughey. Another interesting detail: the TAG Heuer Monaco can be seen on the wrist of Walter White in the hit series “Breaking Bad”.

When it comes to the world of sports, the Monaco simply shines. Race car driver Graham Rahal and tennis player/fashion model Maria Sharapova rely on the technical finesse of the Monaco. The Monaco has also played a part in history, as it has travelled on the wrist of Sammy Davis Junior whilst visiting troops in Vietnam. Throughout the years, Monaco has stayed true to its original spirit and embodies the avant-garde attitude characteristic of TAG Heuer.
