Rolex Daytona Green: From "sleeper hit" to success model
There is no end to the hype surrounding the Rolex Daytona Green: all it took was one comment from a prominent watch enthusiast, and the green Daytona became a successful model overnight. There are many reasons for the incredible popularity of the Rolex Daytona in gold/green: the combination of 18-carat yellow gold and a bold green is breathtaking, plus there has only been one green model in more than 50 model years of the racing chronograph.
At CHRONEXT, you can buy numerous models from the Daytona collection at fair prices - including the green version. There are no waiting lists as we offer you over 7,000 bestsellers and vintage rarities available immediately with a certificate of authenticity. Each model has been inspected and authenticated by certified CHRONEXT watchmakers.
The John Mayer Daytona
When there is a particularly rare version of a Daytona, success seems to be pre-programmed at launch. When the Rolex Daytona in gold/green (Ref. 116508) was presented at Baselworld 2016, the newly presented stainless steel Daytona (Ref. 116500) initially stole the show. When John Mayer, musician and a well-known watch aficionado, called the yellow-gold Daytona with the green dial a "sleeper hit" in 2019, demand for the green reference exploded in no time. Sometimes it just seems to take a trigger for the charm of a particular model to come out. However, there are many justifiable reasons for the hype surrounding the Rolex Daytona Green:
- The myth of the Daytona as the most desirable Rolex model
- The history of the collection and its close association with motorsport
- A unique colour combination of warm yellow gold and electrifying green
- The allure of the rare – the Rolex Daytona Green is extremely rare
- An almost certain increase in value
Green dial on two models
Green dials are booming at Rolex. The best-known example is the green Submariner, which has been available in its third generation since 2020. Only two Daytona models have been produced with a green dial since the debut of the original Ref. 6239 in 1963. In addition to the Rolex Daytona in gold/green (Ref. 116508), the manufacturer has produced a white gold Daytona model (Ref. 116509) with a light green dial in "beach green". The dial has Roman numerals. The watch was optionally delivered with a white gold Oyster strap or a leather strap in a green colour that matches the dial.
From the race track to the wrist
The first Rolex chronograph with the legendary Daytona lettering was launched in 1963. Just one year earlier, the Geneva-based watchmaker became the official timekeeper of the Daytona International Speedway, which is still one of the most famous race tracks in the world. After sales of hand-wound chronographs had been rather sluggish due to their automatic-powered competitors, Rolex launched the first automatic Daytona in 1988 with the Ref. 16520. This new Daytona reference, equipped with a zenith calibre, hit the market like a bomb. But since Zenith could not deliver enough movements, supply fell far short of demand and the "Daytona myth" was born. In the years that followed, the Daytona established itself as the most sought-after Rolex model. Its functionality and its racing DNA are unique in the range of the Geneva manufacturer. Above all, the Rolex Daytona Green and the stainless steel models are among the most sought-after examples in the world.
