Rolex Bicolour watches

Rolex first launched a steel and gold watch in 1930, but it wasn't until the 1980s that this innovative mix of materials really caught on. The combination of stainless steel and yellow or white gold offered a blend of strength and beauty that appealed to that go-getting decade. A trend was born and Rolex bicolour watches became a staple of the era's style pages. And Bicolour watches – or "two-tone" watches as they are also known – have remained in high demand right up until the present day.

Rolex Bicolour terminology: Rolesor and Rolesium

Rolex is one of the biggest brands in the luxury watch market – deservedly so thanks to its uncompromising quality, first class materials and sporty, elegant design. Inevitably, this success has given rise to a thriving fan community, which in turn has thrown up numerous catchy nicknames for particular Rolex watches and variants. At the same time, Rolex has coined well known terms for many of its signature innovations.

When we talk about bicolour Rolex watches, two important terms leap out: Rolesor and Rolesium. What do they mean? CHRONEXT explains.

Rolesor

The term "Rolesor" is the name Rolex officially gives to bicolour watches. The case and outer band links are made of steel; the bezel, crown and inner band links are of yellow gold. For a Rolesor watch in a steel / white gold mix, only the bezel is made of white gold.

Rolesium

"Rolesium" is a term that's only used in the context of the Rolex Yacht-Master. It refers to a unique mix of stainless steel and platinum. The Yacht-Master in Rolesium consists of a case and three-row oyster bracelet of stainless steel. The bezel is made of precious platinum.

Sporty-chic: Rolex bicolour collections at a glance

Bicolour Rolex Datejust

The Datejust is one of the Geneva firm's flagship models, and the bicolour version in particular is arguably the most famous two-tone watch of all time. The perfect companion for life's everyday challenges, this classic, sporty bicolour model with date display is eminently suitable for women as well as men.

Rolex GMT Master in bicolour

Originally designed for pilots, the Rolex GMT Master is now one of the brand's most coveted timepieces. The bicolour version enhances the watch's dynamic looks with a striking combination of high quality metals. While the case and outer band links are in steel, the bezel, crown and inner band links are all crafted from the finest yellow gold.

Rolex Submariner bicolour

A classic diving watch, the Rolex Submariner is admired by professional athletes and amateur swimmers alike. The bicolour model combines steel and yellow gold with a choice of black or blue dials.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in bicolour

Inspired by motor racing, the Rolex Daytona is a chronograph of superlative quality. Because of its chunky, 40 mm diameter case, the Rolex bicolour model has a strong appeal for men, but that's not to say it doesn't have plenty of female fans too.

Rolex bicolour Sea-Dweller

The legendary Rolex Sea-Dweller is a professional diving watch that easily withstands forays into the ocean's depths. Its combination of peerless performance and refined, traditional design makes this watch something very special. Meanwhile, those with an appreciation for all things retro are well served by the bicolour version. The black dial and bezel go well with the steel and yellow gold to give this model a strong vintage look.

Rolex Yacht-Master in bicolour

Whether out on the ocean waves or on dry land, the maritime Rolex Yacht-Master catches the eye with its sporty, elegant design. Complete with rotating bezel, the two-tone version of this legendary regatta watch is available in a unique steel / rose gold mixture or in the steel / yellow gold design originally pioneered by Rolex.

Rolex bicolour watches on famous wrists

Rolex Bicolour watches were all the rage in the 1980s and early '90s, and even today they're always on trend. They've found favour with the show business community too, both on screen and behind the cameras.

As an example of these watches' original popularity, there's a bicolour Datejust on Richard Gere's wrist in the hit romantic comedy Pretty Woman (1990). And in American Psycho (2000) Christian Bale wears a Rolex Datejust 16013 in bicolour in his role as murderous investment banker Patrick Bateman.

Football legend and fashion icon David Beckham also appreciates a mix of steel and precious metal, wearing a bicolour watch from Rolex's sister brand Tudor.
