A true masterpiece, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime is one of the most complicated wrist watches in the world. This timepiece is beautiful within thanks to a total of 20 built-in complications as well as seven patented innovations. To create this rare marvel, the most experienced specialists in the field put in an incredible 100,000 hours of painstaking work. Just creating the individual parts that go into the watch takes 60,000 man hours.

In 2019, a stainless steel Grandmaster Chime sold for 31 million Swiss francs at auction, a record price that saw it go down in history as the most expensive watch in the world. The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 2019 (Ref. 6300A-010) was a one-off and therefore highly sought after. But other versions of the Grandmaster Chime are almost as scarce, limited as they are to seven copies.

The masterly 300 movement

The beating heart of Patek Philippe's Grandmaster Chime is its 300 movement. Made up of 1,366 individual parts, this mechanism is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship. Its staggering complexity is a testament to the first-class skills of Patek Philippe's team of watchmakers. An incredible 20 complications are built into a clockwork with a diameter of only 37 mm. The main power reserve is 72 hours, and that's in addition to a 30 hour reserve for the striking mechanism.

The Grandmaster Chime's seven patents

Continually devoted to the fine art of watchmaking, Patek Philippe has developed seven technical refinements especially for the legendary 300 movement. Unique to this watch, these patented inventions include an alarm mechanism with a time strike feature and the ability to isolate the Grande Sonnerie function in sleep mode. There's also a date repetition mechanism, a four-digit year display and of course the reversible casing. To sum up, the Grandmaster Chime is a horological masterpiece packed full of innovative technology, compelling evidence of this brand's incomparable passion for watchmaking.

Innovative reversible housing

Standard watch cases consist of around 12 individual parts. By contrast, the case of the Grandmaster Chime is made of 214 components, each of which demands the finest craftsmanship and precision. The result is a unique double-faced watch. The Grandmaster Chime has no front or back dial in the traditional sense. Instead, you can swap faces using the innovative turning mechanism. When the crown points to the right, a dial with the time display faces upwards. With the crown to the left, the watch presents a calendar with a 24-hour auxiliary dial and a four-digit year display. The two dials are made of 18 carat gold. Both views show the time and date.

Masters of supercomplications since 1927

Drawing upon its deep understanding of watchmaking, Patek Philippe has been producing timepieces of the highest quality for decades. The Swiss company demonstrated its skills as far back as 1927 when it developed the world's most complicated pocket watch on behalf of the American financier Henry Graves Jr. This watch featured the historic Graves Supercomplication, made up of an astounding 24 complications working in perfect harmony.

On the company's 150th anniversary, Patek Philippe achieved a technical feat never before seen in the luxury watch industry. The legendary 89 movement combined 33 complications and consisted of a total of 1,728 components.

The Swiss company welcomed in the new millennium with the Star Calibre 2000, which powered a watch featuring 21 complications made from 1,118 individual parts. Then in 2014, on its 175th anniversary, the Geneva manufacturer presented the first Grandmaster Chime. The reversible clock with two red gold dials caused a sensation. Fittingly, the case is covered all over with relief engravings of stylised laurel leaves as a symbol of triumph and glory. Limited to seven pieces, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime is priced at over £1,800,000. However, while only the very wealthy might be able to buy a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, surely everyone can appreciate it as a stunning achievement in watchmaking.
