Baselworld 2017: Introducing the Rolex Sea-Dweller "Single Red"
Following 50 years since the release of the first Sea-Dweller in 1967, Rolex has launched the anniversary edition of the professional diver watch that revolutionised the world of fine timepieces, due to its ability to withstand extreme pressures deep underwater. Already one of the most photographed watches of Baselworld 2017 – the new Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller offers a unique look and has some exciting features.
Introducing a Baselworld 2017 Rolex novelty: The Rolex 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller – refined, reliable, and robust
The first Sea-Dweller was released in 1967 and was waterproof to a depth of 610 m – offering three times more than what the Submariner withstood at the time. 11 years later: this increased to 1,220 m thanks to the Rolex devised helium escape valve. Interestingly, the helium escape valve was built to combat the issue of the watch crystal popping out when faced with high pressure underwater. It has since then become an essential and ubiquitous feature in diving watches.
The importance of heritage: The Rolex 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller stays true to its roots
The latest rendition of the Sea-Dweller has a 43mm case size in 904L steel, making it the largest model of the series so far. What’s particularly distinct is the instalment of the cyclops lens, which provides a magnification of the date window – a common feature of other Rolex sports models, and a first for the Sea-Dweller. Going back to its roots, the anniversary edition entails the red Sea-Dweller script on the dial; an addition that provides a pleasing aesthetic and is sure to delight the vintage fans. Furthermore, Rolex has not compromised anything on the practicality and features a Glidelock and Fliplock system, thus allowing the bracelet to easily adjust and extend without requiring any tools. This enables divers to wear the watch over diving suits, and also prevents accidental opening.
As one would expect from Rolex, precision has not been overlooked. The Sea-Dweller Ref. 12660 is powered by Rolex’s latest movement: calibre 3235, automatic with a 70-hour power reserve. This offers to us advances in precision, power reserve, and also provides solid reliability.
